MODERN MACHINE TOOLS

Modern machine tools are capable of processing ultrahard metals not machinable by other methods. Machine tools that form parts by removing metal chips from a work-piece include lathes, shapers and planers, drilling machines, milling machines, grinders, and power saws. The cold forming of metal parts, such as cooking utensils, automobile bodies, and similar items, is done on punch presses, while the hot forming of white-hot blanks is done on forging presses. Modern machine tools cut or form parts to tolerances of plus or minus one ten-thousandth of an inch (0.0025 millimeter). In special applications, precision lap­ping machines can produce parts that are within plus or minus two millionths of an inch (0.0³5 millimeter). Because of the precise dimensional requirements of the parts and the heavy cutting forces exerted on the cutting tool, machine tools combine weight and rigidity with delicate accuracy.

SEMI-AUTOMATIC MACHINE TOOL

A semi-automatic machine tool is a type of machine tools in which part of the opera­tions (transport or auxiliary) is carried out by a human worker and all processing opera­tions are performed automatically without human assistance. A fully automatic machine tool performs all types of operations (including transport, auxiliary and processing) au­tomatically without human assistance. Human worker only controls its operations. First fully automatic machine tools had limited capabilities and could perform only 1–2 pro­cessing operations. They were used for production of separate parts, for example screws of identical shape.

Machine tools equipped with a reprogramming control system can perform several operations instead of one. They can be easily adopted for different modes of operation by changing the program. Even during the operations such machine tools independently change the cutting rate or drilling depth, i.e. the technological processing mode.

Machine tools equipped with a reprogramming control system are multi-purpose and are being used extensively in automatic production lines where they also perform the func­tion of ready production control.
